The phone intermittently fails to register, can anyone provide input based on this log what may be the cause?

Hello Taylorp22,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

It is always useful to include the currently used UC Software version as issues experienced may already be addressed in a newer release.

Please also include if you are using a SIP server or a LYNC server

This also allows yourself and others to check against current software release notes.

The above is also stated in the "Read First"

Therefore the Polycom VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Question: How can I find out my SIP UC Software Version or the BootROM Version of my Phone?
Resolution: Please check here

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Best Regards

UC version: 5.1.2.1801

We are using a SIP server, please let me know if further info is needed and thank you.

Hello Taylorp22,

UC Software 5.1.2 is no longer a supported Version and I suggest to update to a currently supported version like UC Software 5.4.4

The community's VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Jan 19, 2012 Question: How to troubleshoot Polycom VoIP related Issues?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

and

Jul 11, 2014 Question: How can I capture the network traffic of the phone remotely?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

The above should help you to troubleshoot this locally.

The next step then would be to work with your Service Provider or open a service ticket with your Polycom reseller.

If the reseller is some Internet discounter and is unable or unwilling to do this please provide me with a MAC address of one of the phones and I look this up.

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Hello,

I would like to add that Ive been running in to this issue more and more and I still have no solid solution or know what exactly is causing it.

Feb 09 - 11:00:34 - cfg |*|00|Prov|Finished updating configuration
Feb 09 - 11:00:36 - brow |*|00|Initial log entry. Current logging level 4
Feb 09 - 11:01:05 - sip |4|00|Registration failed User: 323, Error Code:480 Temporarily not available

It is VVX 310 running 5.3.0.12074

My theory is that the router/firewall where the phone is located is not allowing the phone to go through for some reason, maybe NAT or UPnP. Even though it has all ports allowed and the user can access the PBX from the network.

This happens especially after making changes to the phone that require the phone to reboot, for example upgrading the firmware.

I have found 3 ways of recovering from 480 Error.

1. Downgrade or upgrade the firmware ( 90% success rate)
2. Reboot the router/firewall and the phone (50% success rate)
3. Let the phone sit for couple of hours and it will recover by it self. (90% success rate)

Hello LPiek,

welcome back to the Polycom Community.

Firstly the UC Software 5.3.0 is no longer supported.

We would then need more information who the provider is and how is the phone configured and what kind of registration times etc.

This most likely needs our technical team to look so please post a valid MAC address so I can help you lookup who this would be.

You can of course keep posting here and await other responses but should not expect Polycom support to fix anything unless this is escalated.

Best Regards

@SteffenBaierUK Thank you for the reply.

This issue has come and gone many times, its really hard to duplicate it as it does not happen all the time.

When the issue does occur we have to get the phone operational ASAP, so im sure you can imagine it would be kind of dificult to open a ticket or give a call to support when it does happen.

Im doing my best to document each case and when I am able to duplicate it I will be sure to call support and get help.

As of now i have seen this issue happening on all versions of firmware 4.0 +

Mac address of the device that the issue occured today is 0004f25dd825

It is a simple setup where to phone is located, ISP modem to a Netgear Wifi router with SIP ALG disabled.

Below is the log entry for when this even occured.

Maybe you have any suggestions for when the issue happens is there any other evidence i shoul collect.

Hello LPiek,

The serial you provided is a VVX310 sold by Vonage Business Solutions and I have this installed since 25/07/2014

So the unit is well out of warranty.

Usually we send a self generated 480 if we cannot route the call / registration. To troubleshoot the above we need to lower the logging and a wireshark trace.

This is usually outside the scope of the community so I can only ask you to work with Vonage on this.

Try and utilize below:

Good mornign @SteffenBaierUK,

So I have been trying to collect more information about this case and finally today I had the perfect example.

Its giving me 480 Temporarily unavailable. (which i already know has something to do with the network)

VVX: 411
MAC: 64:16:7F:2C:8A:5E

P/N: 3111-48450-001 Rev:A
UC Software Version: 5.7.2.1277 (I origianlly had it on 5.8)
Updater Version: 5.9.2.1208

Checking network settings on the phone reveils that SUBNET MASK is set to an external IP address. (see attached).

Now, where did this IP came from.

The DHCP server is a Zyxel USG 40 device providing few extra options.

Option 66 pointing to the tftpserver

Option 43 HEX wifi controller which value equals to the IP address of the subnet mask.

Why would the phone use the option 43 for its subnet mask?

I can also confirm that it happens on other phones that I have in the office, execpt for one VVX 500 that has 3 sip lines configured one of them actually registers.

Thank you.

Hello @LPiek,

welcome back to the Polycom Community.

This is working as designed as the VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Aug 24, 2015 Question:What basic network data is send and received by a Polycom phone?

Resolution: Please check this post => here <=

We are able to parse these Options if they are just send to everybody rather than just for a specific vendor class.

There is no way to prevent this.

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.
