Best practices for Video Content?

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting the best video quality when sending Content? This is all new equipment (minus the HDX's obviously).





Web Suite Products, Lync Integration, Content Connect, Media Suite and RealAccess



Everything is internal, 10.x.x.x networks with 20+ GroupSeries (310/500, generally newest firmware - all less than a year old). We don't foresee a bunch of traffic passing through the RPAD (in/out) right away, but what we have tested seems to be working (certificates, internal/external DNS, etc). We had some implemantion issues but between our reseller and Polycom we have those straightended out.


We also have a large number of HDX units, mostly 7000/8000 and almost all 3.x or higher (a couple 2.6, which are backups for the most part).


We are setting up conference templates on the DMA (and not interacting with the bridge itself often). In our testing we can't seem to come up with anything that is really suitable for full-motion video as Content. We don't do a ton of video (youtube, web videos generally - occasionally a DVD) but the demand is there (Film classes and the like). The best performane change seems to just change the Content input on each endpoint from Sharpness to Motion. Which is what we do now (using third party MGC bridge, CIF).


However, it's not feasible to switch the endpoint settings back and forth based on the class, etc. MOST material is document camera and basic PC/Mac screen (PowerPoint, showing materials online, etc). So sharpness is preferred.


Has anyone figured out settings or an approach that assists with getting the best full motion video quality when using content? We are actually open to setting up multiple conference templates and scheduling classes that are video-heavy in one template and those that need the sharpness on another (math, history - showing maps on document cameras, etc). BUT it seems that so far the biggest difference is on the endpoint side (motion is servicable for video, sharpness being useless). We can't constantly switch endpoint configs back and forth (easily, from what I understand).


Finally, we are currently having issues with Content sound. From HDX or GS endpoints (HDMI or VGA w/audio). Content sound locally, in room - but nothing on the remote endpoints. This is calling in on VMRs setup in the DMA, in the VMRs that are setup ad-hoc/dynamic by the Skype/Lync configuration, etc. We have yet to have any Content sound via the calls themselves. Mic sound is fine whether the client is via the web suite, skype/lync, HDX, group series, etc.


We do have a ticket open with our reseller, but I wanted to get some more opinions if possible. Thanks

Hi mate,


the biggest factor in getting this working is going to be bandwidth. You'll need the conference templates and codecs set to motion as well but I've never seen anything approaching 25+fps under 3 meg connection speeds

I can throw bandwidth at it. Not sure we want to go that that level, 3m - but we plan on making 1024, 1484 or 1920 calls. We have 2-5 endpoints at a location, 100Mb up/down available at each location.


Did some testing and the best, so far, is the motion (endpoint) and 'live video' on the conference template (for content). Not seeing much difference between 1024 and 1920.


It may come down to having some endpoints, ones that are more likely to be used for full motion video, set as Motion for Content and schedule those classes with a template that is setup for live video. The other endpoints being setup for sharpness and using a template for that on the bridge.


I got a ticket in with our reseller but haven't heard back yet. We still have the problem with no content audio though. Not sure where to look. Direct dialing between endpoints we have content sound, but nothing through the bridge. Any ideas? I setup real basic templates (CIF, etc) to test, still no content sound.

We are able to get Content audio going by resetting the RMX. Not ideal, but we are not in a production enviroment yet so it wasn't a big deal to try that. We'll continue to monitor the situation.


Regarding the Content full motion video, we'll just experiment with various conference templates until we find the best balance of bandwidth requirments and motion/sharpness settings. It may come down to seperate conference templates and endpoint settings for rooms/classes that require more full motion video and standard sharpness settings for classes with traditional course materials.
