Hi,
I am working with a client who has 200 some VVX phones configured out in the field. These phones were configured by another partner with an off site provisioning server. The current configuration is mostly very basic with only a few parameters configured and the phones are running old firmware (ucs 5.2)

As I have been engaged with them we have built a brand new configuration for all of their phones basically from the bottom up. The new configuration contains around 87 different parameters that are configured in our configuration.cfg file. We are pushing out the new configuration file as well as updated firmware from a centralized provisioning server. The one thing we are noticing that some of the phones are keeping some of their settings, possibily those that were manually set on phone.

If you look at the attachement on our configuration. On the updated phones, the bottom 2 rows (Configuration.cfg and qos.cfg) show values that we are expecting, 87 and 5 respectively, those are the configurations that we have pushed out and the count looks accurate and consitent against all updated phones. SIP, WEB, and Local all seem to vary phone by phone. When we push out the new configuration, we are not doing a factory reset. Is there any reason our new configuration just doesnt override everytihng on the phone all together and push our configuration only?

I was following greginsydney's blog and I thought these prov.polling settings (screenshot) might help keep our phones standardize. If someone goes on their phone and tries to make changes, based on a daily schedule the phones will reach out to the provisioning server, pull down a new configuration and override anything that's been changed. Maybe I am mistaken on how this is supposed to work.

Can anyone clarify?
Thanks for reading as well as helping on many of my questions. It is apprecaited.
Thanks
-Matt

Hello medlhuber,

Basically if their deployment works with DHCP Option 160 all their phones are a non LYNC SKU and they need to purchase as many Licenses as they have phones.

Scansource can probably tell you how many they purchased.

In regards of logging off I cannot tell you without looking at the logs but it should not be a big problem using BToE.

Hello medlhuber,

welcome back to the Polycom Community. Did you sort your customers licensing issue from => here <= yet?

Polycom reserves the right to audit your deployment to verify that you have sufficient licenses to match the number of devices being used.

In regards to your new question the community's VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Oct 7, 2011 Question: Do I always need a Provisioning Server or can I configure a Phone via the Web Interface or via the Phone Gui?
Resolution: Please check => here <=

The above outlines:

The precedence order for configuration parameter changes is as follows (highest to lowest):

• User changes through the phone’s user interface (written to the server as <mac>-phone.cfg)

• Web configuration through a browser (written to the server as <mac>-web.cfg)

• Polycom CMA system

• Configuration files loaded from the Provisioning Server

• Default values (included in the UC Software or sip.cfg / phone1.cfg pre UC Software)

I suggest you factory default these phones and then load your CFG.

Thank you Steffan!

2 more questions for you.

1.  One observation we made while pushing out the firmware and configuraiton.  We had about 200 phones, prior to beginning the push, we had 3 phones that were noted as signed out using this handy tool (http://www.myskypelab.com/2015/10/skype-for-business-lync-polycom-vvx.html).  After we pushed the firmware we noticed that the number increased to about 64 phones that were signed out.  Do you have any idea why some phones automatically signed back in and some did not after the powercycle/firmware load/configuration load?  Are credentials cached in the phone someplace and maybe some people previously changed their passwords or something?  All users are using BTOE.

2.  As for the licensing.  We havene't sorted that out yet and need to.  What is the best way to find out what the customer currently owns?  Can Scansource tell us that information?

Thanks for your help.  I do apprecaite it and intend to get the licensing sorted out now.
