Many of you have seen our presentation titled “Polycom Voice Solutions for Microsoft” available to partners on connect.polycom.com (login required).
We sometimes get the question:
“Since SoundPoint phones are listed as ‘Lync Qualified’ on Microsoft Technet, why don’t you talk about SoundPoint phones in the ‘Choosing a phone for Microsoft UC environments’ discussion?”
The short answer is:
“In Microsoft Lync environments, the features on SoundPoint are only a small fraction of the features available on the Polycom VVX series business media phones and SoundPoint phones are not supported by Polycom in any Skype for Business environments".
Polycom has a broad selection of voice solutions for Microsoft. Even when a customer may already own SoundPoint phones, the SoundPoint phones will not deliver a "Microsoft integrated user experience". Why? SoundPoint phones can’t support most of the newer Skype for Business/Lync features that Polycom VVX series phones support.
. The VVX series, as business media phones, were designed more recently with forward-looking feature performance and capabilities in mind. The VVX series is where our desktop feature development with Microsoft has been focused for several years now.
Here are examples of some of the newer features Polycom has developed for the VVX phones that are not supported on SoundPoint phones:
Boss/Admin (Shared Line Appearance)
Better Together over Ethernet (BToE)
Skype for Business/Lync Contact Cards
Front-End Pool Pairing (allows failover to a secondary Lync server)
Skype for Business/Lync Address Book Search
Color Expansion Module support with Skype for Business/Lync favorites
Enhanced Presence support
Customizable Music on Hold
Polycom Acoustic Fence
Synchronized Call Logs
Office 365 Cloud PBX Support (Skype for Business Online)
Support for Skype for Business Server 2015
As you can see, these are important features for customers to consider. Many of the customers we talk to are migrating from Cisco, Nortel, and Avaya PBX’s where the proprietary phones they have been using are often either End-of-Life, already fully depreciated, or leased. The proprietary phones from Cisco, Nortel, and Avaya cannot be directly registered to Skype for Business or Microsoft Lync. When the customer is not bringing SoundPoint phones they own already into a Microsoft UC with Voice deployment, we simply do not want to complicate the decision making process by bringing the SoundPoint phone into the selection process when Polycom VVX phones represent the future and are clearly the better investment.
For new Microsoft voice installations where you are purchasing new phones to replace aging, end-of-life phones running on an older TDM PBX, Polycom also recommends you choose the VVX series phones.
