Does the "Network Quality" settings in a Group Series have any affect on a Skype video call through a codec?

Far end Skype users (PC client) are experiencing poor video quality issues when near end codec is sending content (text based PowerPoint). Codec camera quality is good though. Adjusting the network quality settings in the codec doesn't seem to make a difference in improving content quality.

I wonder if Skype/Microsoft is handling the quality behind the scenes and there is no control of that?

Hello @docegueda ,

welcome to the Poly Community.

Both the communities Must Read First and the FAQ reference the basic minimum information a new or follow up post should contain.

This ensures the questions having to be asked are limited and any new or follow up post contains the right amount of details to ensure any voluntary participant within the community does not spend additional time chasing basic information.

As a reminder the basic information asked for:

  • Provide the exact Software Version of your Codec
  • Provide the Codec Model
  • Provide the Call Platform (aka openSIP,Teams, Skype for Business Online, Skype for Business on Premise, Lync or H.323)
  • Additional Poly Infrastructure (RPRM,PDMS,RPCS,RMX or CMA)
  • If possible provide a Log and either attach them or use the Code Tag.Consult the Troubleshooting Section found within the FAQ if applicable
  • If possible provide the Serial Number of the device
  • Provide details for example if the issue is a day 1 issue or only happened after an upgrade or any other relevant details
  • For questions around Support please check here

Whilst providing some of these details may not directly impact any possible answer the community can provide, it does enable Poly to have an overview of the current software used. In addition, providing all details at the same time allow us to check logs or look up potential support partners if an issue needs to come into support. It also enables us to verify the entitlement for using features.

Please ensure you always check the FAQ's and/or utilize the community search before posting any new topics or follow up posts.

Are you sharing content aka could this be RDP instead of VBSS?

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Best Regards

Steffen Baier

Hi Steffen,

Here is a little more information on the codecs experiencing the quality issue:

- Software: 6.1.7

- Hardware: Group Series 310

- Licenses: Skype for Business Interoperabilty

- Environment: Office365 Cloud

In the "Content Sharing" settings, "Microsoft Desktop Sharing" is set to "Disable". Should RDP or VBSS be enabled for better quality?

Thank you,

Daniel

Hi @docegueda,

you should use VBSS. Why? Here´s a good explanation:

You haven't mentioned what bitrate you are making the call at. This would have a big impact on video quality when sharing content.

HP Recommended

"Preffered speed for placed calls" is set to 3072.

Call statistics is showing"Call Speed" is at 1920

and "Content TX - Rate Used" is varying significantly between 10 and 1100, but often around 600.

Jeff Schertz's blog has a statement about the "Network Quality" settings, in the comment section:

http://blog.schertz.name/2017/05/polycom-group-series-with-skype-for-business-server/

"Most of these can simply be left at the default values. Some are irrelevant with SfB registration, others do impact behaviors but not always as expected either. The various admin guides and release notes cover some details but Ido plan to touch on a few of these in future articles as applicable."

If this is so, which are the settings that can impact an SfB call?
