So recently we have got a polycom hdx8000. My question is how does it communicate with other devices? Does it only work with other polycom devices or can I also call other people on it? What kind of devices does it connect to?

Hello ItsSomething,

The Polycom reseller who sold you the unit should be the person to be consulted on this as the answer depends what existing Polycom equipment or licenses you have.

In addition the Admin Guide and/or the Release notes => here <=

Of cause certain features depend on the yet unknown software version your HDX is currently running.

Polycom HDX's support various industry standard's for video collaboration as an example H.323 or SIP.

The full Product interoperability is listed in the release notes matching your software version.

If you are still struggling with the above and the organisation who sold the HDX to you is unable to answer your questions please contact Polycom in your region as we do sell consultancy and support so you can avoid having to ask individual questions in order to utilize your equipment to the full satisfaction your organisation requires.

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Best Regards

Just adding on Steffen's great answer, as a long time user of HDX's and video conferencing support, I find it interesting that you have obtained an HDX unit possibly without knowing how it could be used.  As previously pointed out, depending on software versions and options activated, you should be able to do pt-t-pt video calls with other standard SIP or H.323 units.  This would all be dependent on your local area network security infrastructure (firewalls, router access lists, etc) which could block/allow these SIP/H.323 calls to be set up and also block/allow the ports required for two-way audio/video traffic.  The HDX might also have ISDN capability which would require BRI's or a PRI for ISDN based video calls.  The unit potentially could place/receive pt-t-pt video  to/from another unit or to/from a multi-point video bridge or service provider.  If it had a multipoint capability option enabled, it might also be able to host multipoint video calls. Good luck.
