Is there a way to make the automatic gain control more smooth and linear, rather than suddenly jumping from quiet to loud when it turns down loud sounds?

Recorded video example:

Play it, and move time slider to about 13:30 and just listen for 13:45-14:15...

When the kindergarten students sing and ring their bells the Polycom audio suddenly jumps to very quiet, and you can't hear anything, then suddenly it's back to normal when they stop ringing the bells.

At 14:45 they start ringing their bells and the audio turns way down suddenly, again. The same when the audience applauds at 15:03.

We're probably not using it as intended, but, the HDX 7000 Eagle Eye is in the middle of a gymnasium on a tripod, with the conferencing microphone hanging over a folding chair about 25ft in front of the stage. I don't know of a better way to set it up.

You can see the folding chair with the conferencing mic hanging on it, at 24:00 in that video.

Hi Dale Mahalko,

i´ve just seen the video. What you could try is to enable the live music mode for sessions like this.

What is Live Music Mode?
This feature, when enabled, transmits audio using a configuration that reproduces live music picked up by microphones more faithfully. For example, noise suppression and automatic gain control are disabled when this setting is enabled.

Another point to mention is, that one (or more) ceiling microphone arrays would propably better fit your needs than the tabletop mic..

You can find more information here.

Cheers, Uwe

The tabletop microphone is not designed for this application and for this large of a facility.  The microphone array is very sensitive since it is designed for conference rooms, and will be adjusting for other sounds in the room, both direct and reflective.

First it needs to be sat on a flat hard surface and the specification is for pickup within 6' radius, though it does work beyond that.

Besides Live Music Mode, make sure StereoSurround is not active.

It would not be an easy thing to properly record an event in this type of facility.

It's not an easy space to record, period. So many people, such a large space, both on the stage and on the floor.

I will experiment with the Live Music mode to see what is possible there. Thank you.
