Hi,

We have installed a Polycom RPG500 using 2 Breakout boxes, as we want to get the camera image in our Crestron matrix and send it again to the Polycom codec. So, we get camera image via HDCI converted to HDMI and we send it again to the codec via HDMI converted to HDCI. This works perfectly.

But we would like to keep the RS232 control of the camera via the Polycom codec and not from another control system but this doesn't seem to work at the moment. So, we connected directly a RS232 cable between the 2 breakout boxes. We used pins 2 and 3 for Tx/Rx, we also tried to swap them. We have also connected the pin 5 to 5 for the ground, and then we tried the pin 9 to 9 as we saw in the user's guide that pin 9 needed to be connected. Did somebody already try this connection?

For information, we can control the camera from the codec when we connect directly the HDCI to the codec, so there is nothing wrong with the codec or with the camera.

Make sure all pins on the DB9 are used.  From the UG for the DBA:

Use with certified EIA/TIA-RS-232 cable. Use straight-through type, not crossover.

  • Do not hot plug the serial cable. Disconnecting or connecting the RS-232 cable during operation may cause unexpected system behavior. If this happens, cycle the power to the codec or camera to eliminate this issue.
  • The signal quality is dependent on the quality of the HDMI and serial signals at the output of the DBA and associated cables, if the mating device has an equalizer, and the electrical noise in the installed environment. To ensure proper operation with all devices, the HDMI and EIA/TIA-RS-232 specs should be met at the input to all mating devices.

Hi,

What do you mean with "make sure all pins on the DB9 are used"?

This means we have to connect other pins than 2, 3 and 9?

Thanks.

The recommendation is to use all the pins.  You MAY be able to get away with just 2, 3, 5 and 9.

See the attached which is cut from the User's Guide for the DBA.
