I have a polycom provisioning server setup with currently provisions VVX500's and VVX600's including firmware upgrades, effectively when plugging in a phone it upgrades the firmware to the latest version and applies the settings we need.

The settings element is working on the CX5500 but I'm struggling with the firmware element. It looks like the firmware has changed significantly with no .sip.ld files available is there a way to ugprade firmware from the provisioning server?

I've looked at the custom web server with the "all.xml" which doesn't seem work, though I haven't tried this with the VVX's so it could be a configuration issue - if this did work can the update server settings be provisioned if so what are the parameters?

Hello Robin,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

Provisioning the CX5500 is fundamentally the same as it utilizes the same structure of the directory once a for example VVX600 Firmware ZIP fils is unpacked.

In addition the CX5500 Software must also be downloaded and unpacked within the same directory into a sub directory called millennium

The CX5500 will then download the software from the \millennium Directory and any configuration files specified within the 000000000000.cfg or <mac>.cfg files.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm no wiser. The 000000000000.cfg file has the following for the VVX phones -

<APPLICATION_SPIP600 APP_FILE_PATH_SPIP600="sip_318.ld" CONFIG_FILES_SPIP600="phone1_318.cfg, sip_318.cfg" />

This "sip.ld" I understand to be file it looks for to ugprade the firmware?

However for the CX5500 all I see is the "millennium" directory and no sip.ld file or any real way to reference it, the administrator guide says it can be done but doesn't give any detail at all.

So the question is, if the upgrade mechanism is the same how do I get the 000000000000.cfg to reference the "millenniumm" directory?

Hello Robin,

  • The CX5500 does not use the 0000000000.cfg or <mac>.cfg to check for the firmware

    The CX5500 does expect the Firmware to be in the Root Directory of the Provisioning server in a Sub Directory called \Millenium

  • The CX5500 does use the 0000000000.cfg or <mac>.cfg to load additional configuration files

A provisioning Server example can be found => here <=

That makes sense, I have been using .cfg to deploy settings and that works fine.

So the problem is that we have to login in each and every phone to set it up, which isn't going to work as we deploy these globally (in large numbers) to end users.

One final piece to the puzzle can the following be configured via a cfg file? -

=> update server

=> update frequency

If that can be done that should remove the requirement to login to every phone.

Thanks,

Robin.

Hello Robin,

Yes and No,

we currently have a bug only affecting the CX5500 as it can read the DHCP string that can provide the Provisioning server and it can load the configuration providing the update Server but then fails to actually use it.

If you once login to the CX5500 and set it manually or update the configuration via the GUI it will work from then on.

Please go ahead and log a case with your Polycom reseller and quote VOIP-98991

The parameters would be:

<web upgrade.custom.server.url="ftp://1:1@10.252.149.106" />

The above would use the Username 1 and the Password 1 for the IP stated.

Can the "update frequency" be deployed as well via the cfg file?

I've updated the server but obviously nothing happens as the it's not set to update...

Hello Robin,

the admin guide covers the prov.polling parameters.

Have a look at :

Hmmmm not having the best experience with this provisioning, things I've found to work / not work -

option 66 / 166 works on both the CX5500 & VVX600 - as in it will pickup the provisioning server and deploy settings.

The configuration file I'm using is -

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?>
<LYNC>
<device device.baseProfile="Lync" device.set="1" device.baseProfile.set="1" />
<httpd httpd.enabled="1" httpd.cfg.enabled="1" httpd.cfg.port="80" httpd.cfg.secureTunnelEnabled="0" />
<web upgrade.custom.server.url="ftp://xxx:xxx@10.10.10.145" prov.polling.mode="rel" prov.polling.period="360" />
</LYNC>

The first two lines work fine (device & httpd).

The web line gives the results -

The phone GUI is not updated, the CX5500 shows "http://downloads.polycom.com/voice/millennium_cx_series" with the default polling information (never & 12:00AM). The VVX600 shows the selection for the polycom hosted server.

BUT both phones show the correct settings when exporting the config (export.cfg).

The ftp server is NOT accessed by either phone during the polling period (the ftp server does work as I can see it being accessed when the phones are rebooted / factory reset and settings being deployed).

If I press the update now it goes to the default polycom update server.... so the update server settings & polling setting appear to be being ignored, unless I'm missing something fundemental but given the settings appear in the configuration when exported I'm not sure what is going on?

Hello Robin,

I did mention this earlier, this is a bug and it does not take the Update Server via the first boot.

Please access the Screen of the Unit and navigate to Settings => Basic => Update configuration

Once that has been done it should take it. We are tracking this internally via VOIP-99157

I believe its best if you work with your Polycom reseller so we can open a ticket for you and track you as a user and keep you updated on the progress.
