Hi,

I have been tasked with standardising the format of a client's DHCP configuration. And would like to clarify a few things, firstly I see that the client is using option 66 and all of the documentation I can see states that option 160 is best practice. Should I update this ? IS there any advantage of upgrading to 160?

I was planning  on renaming the destination folder then updating the option66 / option 160 would I be correct in saying unless the phones are reset while this is completed there will be no impact to the users as the content in the folder would remain unchanged? And the phones would receive the update with the new lease?

The current firmware version of the phones is 5.3.0.12074

Hello nickolas,

The phone will not query the DHCP server and its options unless the IP lease has expired or the phone is being rebooted.

Signing into LYNC via Pin & Extension will also cause a DHCP discover.

Hello nickolas,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

There is no difference. Polycom added Option 160 in order to avoid issues in environments where option 66 was already used by other VoIP phones from different manufacturers.

If you order for example a LYNC SKU Polycom VVX phone it will use Option 161 instead to ensure a mix of phones can be used.

Thanks Stephen appreciate the prompt reponse. To clarify updating the path contained within the option 66 will not cause an update, or reboot of the telephones? The config files will stay the same, only the path to the files will change.

Hi Steffen ,

We also have a similiar problem; voice and data in same LAN. We have a local dhcp for data which support option 66 and we want polycom phones to only accept dhcp offer from remote voice dhcp (option 160 ) .However, it is getting ip from local dhcp ;which we don't want. Is there any solution avialable for that ?

any firmaware to disable option 66 or any other solution?

Thanks,

Vikram

Hello Vikram,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

It is always useful to include the currently used SIP or UC Software version as issues experienced or a question asked may already be addressed in a newer release.

Please also include if you are using a SIP server or a LYNC / Skype for Business server.

In addition what Phone Model is this?

This also allows yourself and others to check against current software release notes, Administrator Guides or FAQ post’s.

The above is also stated in the "Must Read First" and is the absolute minimum requirement every new post should include. .

In addition providing us with this basic information gives Polycom an idea what Software Versions are used in the field and avoids wasting time trying to troubleshoot issues which have already been addressed.

Therefore the Polycom VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Question: How can I find out my SIP or UC Software Version of my Phone?
Resolution: Please check here

I suggest you look at this:

In addition you may want to look at:

Aug 24, 2015 Question:What basic network data is send and received by a Polycom phone?

Resolution: Please check this post => here <=
