Hello friends, good afternoon.

I'm configuring a provisioning server to apply settings automatically in Polycon Endpoints, but i'm some doubts, could you help me?

Reading Polycom manuals, i discovered it's possible apply configs at Polycom phones automatically per device. Thinking this, i did some tests. In these tests, implanted the structure as file attachedin this post.

See attached file this post.

where:

polycom = default user all IPs telephones, this user and a password would be used to authenticate and permit access to provisioning server.

basic-config_[PHONE_PART_NUMBER].cfg = common config all telephones per part number (Ex: IP, netmask, SIP Port, etc).

group-config_[PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS].cfg =  common config between IP telephones per group.

config_[PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS].cfg = specific config per IP telephone (Ex: user and password to authenticate in PBX server).

000000000000-directory.xml = default contacts, is used when telefone IP is used for the first time in the network.

[PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS]-directory.xml = default contacts per IP telephone.

After discovery is possible to do deployments based on users, using User Profiles. I decided, do a config merge two solutions, configs per device and per user.

Example:

Fixed configs (configs for all devices)
- IP PBX Server, SIP Port;

Configs per user (User Profiles)

- User and password PBX-IP Server

But, i didn't had much success in deployment per user, because i have many doubts. Follow some doubts below:

1. Is possible deployment contacts using a config per user. Example: [USER]-directory.xml?

2. What template i should use to deploy configs, using User Profiles? I downloaded in Polycom UC Software 4.0.7, and came some files together, as applications.cfg, device.cfg, features.cfg, h323.cfg, reg-advanced.cfg, reg-basic.cfg, region.cfg, sip-basic.cfg, sip-interop.cfg, video.cfg, video-integration, but i didn't recieve a file user.cfg. Where i could get this template?

3.  This method merging fixed configs per device, and configs per user is the best way to deploy phones or you suggest another way? Another option, would be deploy all configs per user, but i think the first way is better, but how i don't have any experience with provisioning server, i'm not sure this is best way. This is the first time i configure one.

4. Are you had a complete manual explaining how configure provisioning server per user? Because i read Polycom UC Software guide 4.0.0 and Making_Phone_Settings_Portable_with_User_Profiles_FP60688_0, but i didn't understand very well, how i could do this deployment.

Hello thiagojmf,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

Using the User Profile really only makes sense if Users move around in an office using different phones.

If they always sit at the same desk using the same phone I would go with the substitute version.

To answer your user profile directory question:

  • Likewise, if a user updates their contact directory while logged in, the updates will be defined in a
    <user>-directory.xml.

Above is a quote from the Making Phone Settings Portable with User Profiles document.

Hello Steffen.

Thanks for your help.

I think your reply helped a lot, but don't answer all my doubts. I continue with these doubts:

1. What template i should use to deploy configs, using User Profiles? I downloaded in Polycom UC Software 4.0.7, and came some files together, as applications.cfg, device.cfg, features.cfg, h323.cfg, reg-advanced.cfg, reg-basic.cfg, region.cfg, sip-basic.cfg, sip-interop.cfg, video.cfg, video-integration, but i didn't recieve any file user.cfg. Where i could get this template?

2. Are you had a complete manual explaining how configure provisioning server per user? Because i read Polycom UC Software guide 4.0.0 and Making_Phone_Settings_Portable_with_User_Profiles_FP60688_0, but i didn't understand very well, how i could do this deployment.

3. About method deployment, i think the User Profiles are better for company, because this option offers mobility, but i don't know if i could use a merged deployment (some configs per phone, and others per user), because i don't know this is possible and if this a good practice.

Hello thiagojmf,

the templates coming with the software are the only ones that exist.

If you are creating individual user files you are expected to manually create these for the individual users.

The only documents available are the ones you have already utilized.

The community's VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Oct 20, 2011 Question: How can I use the User Login Feature introduced in UC Software 4.0.0?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

The above details this within the community and I amended this today to include more Information and details. It also has a link leading to an automated script in the development area of the community.

Mar 08, 2013 Question: What files does my phone download or upload and why?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

Above post details what files are downloaded and I added additional details explain the files that are created or uploaded / downloaded when using the Login functionality.

If you require further support you will need to contact your Polycom reseller as they would provide Tier 1 support or raise a Polycom support ticket for yourself.
