Hi,

Setup: 150 VVX 600's and CX3000 devices spread over 6 different Vlans. All running the 501 firmware. Need to set up a provisioning solution for al the phones (maybe 6 times spread over the Vlans).

Conditions: Lync Control Panel is not available to upgrade all devices. Also, There must be no user intervention, so everything must be remotely done (including rebooting) by teh administrator.

Actions:

- Installed the FTP role/feature of Windows Server 2012 and obtained an address: ftp://serverIPaddress. Also configured a username and password ( set to PLcmSpIp/ PlcmSpIp => because this is the default Polycom servername and pwd and no user/device intervention is needed)
- Tested the FTP://serveripaddress in browser and it is connected after inserting above credentials.
- Set DHCP scope option on VLan2 for 66 on ftp://PlcmSpIp:PlcmSpIp@Serveripaddress -> replicated to force
- Downloaded the files from polycom as split, unzipped it and put in to root that is pointed in the FTP server
- According to the Polycom  Admin Guid: Opened the config file map and opened site.cfg -> VoIpProt.SIP.specialEvent.checksync.always set to 1 ( openen the .cfg in XML notepad )
- Also set the Prov.polling.enabled to 1 : prov.polling.mode to "abs" : prov.polling.period to default 86400 : prov.polling.time to 03:00 and .random to default (not filled).  ---> Saved the .cfg file.

Findings:

- The devices in Vlan2 are note rebooting after this change.
- When checking the settings (status -> platform -> config)  on a phone on vlan2 is see that the BootServeraddress is not pointed to the FTP, only BootServType iss et default to FTP
- Rebooted the test phone and then checked the platform settings -> FTP is pointed to the right address ( the one set in the DHCP 66) -> after the reboot the device is not upgrading though..
- Tried another phone in the Vlan2 and after the reboot this one isn't upgrading. After restoring to factory default settings, the phone is 'initializing network....' and is upgrading. But this is not a solution, because the user should change the Base Profile to Lync (from Generic), change the Pool and Timezone. (150 times doing this is not a solution).

What is going on here? I followed every instruction and have set up pretty much any FTP solution. I also tried downloading FileZilla Server -> Added a Shared Folder (Root) with username/passwd PlcmSpIp/PlcmSpIp, full rights but the FTP could not be reached ..

I need help from all of you! haha Thanks!!

can you access your provisioning server if you enter ftp://PlcmSpIp:PlcmSpIp@Serveripaddress in a broswer?

Did you follow this guide from Jeff Schertz?

Hello Jiboshiva,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

There are several variables at play with this kind of request.

  • Firstly the CX3000 will only ever update from the LYNC Server.

In addition there are various follow up questions which have not really been documented or described.

The community's VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Mar 08, 2013 Question: What files does my phone download or upload and why?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

You do mention the file called site.cfg but you did not specify if you either modified the 00000000000.cfg or created an individual <mac>.cfg in order to load this.

Oct 7, 2011 Question: What is the relevance of the 000000000000.cfg or <mac>.cfg?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

Both post’s above explain how you actually load the files or specify what is loaded.

then

Jul 10, 2013 Question: How can I use VLAN's with Polycom phones?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

  • How did you provide the phones with a VLAN ?

  • LLDP or CDP or via the configuration file?

You need to verify that the phone is actually in the assigned VLAN and can route the traffic to the DHCP specified provisioning server

You mention that the phones are not rebooting after you specified VoIpProt.SIP.specialEvent.checksync.always=”1”

Oct 7, 2011 Question: Reboot the Phone remotely or via the Web Interface

Resolution: Please check => here <=

As explained in above FAQ post does is reboot when the phone receives a SIP Notify with the Event set as check-syn.

If you do not send this from a SIP server or a SIP scrip the phone will not reboot.

The polling will only work if the phone can actually reach the FTP server, which it seem it cannot.

The setup is rather complex and is outside my own scope to troubleshoot through the community itself.

You simply will need to either span a port and then activate syslog in order to troubleshoot this network issue.

Jan 19, 2012 Question: How to troubleshoot Polycom VoIP related Issues?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

And

Oct 17, 2011 Question: How can change Logging Levels or use Syslog?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

Again above FAQ post's describes this in detail.

If these post’s and any other post that can be found in the FAQ or the Community search does not get you any further you will need to contact your Polycom reseller.

Please be aware of the following when utilizing UCS 4.1.0 or later:

The use of Polycom UC Software versions 4.1.X (“Software”) requires the purchase of a separate Software license for every device that will use the Software in a Lync environment. You may not install, access, or use the Software in a Lync environment on more devices than are listed on your license until additional licenses have been purchased and authorized by Polycom. These licenses should be purchased from the same company from which you purchased the devices. You may operate devices against a Lync server for trial purposes for up to 30 days without purchasing a license. Use of the Software is subject to the terms and conditions of the End User License Agreement.

Polycom reserves the right to audit your deployment to verify that you have sufficient licenses to match the number of devices being used.

Information in regards of License Part Numbers can be found here
