Hello,

when trying to upgrade the firmware on a IP 550 Polycom phone (192.168.1.115), I get the following in the FTP server logs :

The error = 426 Failure writing network stream

When trying to obtain the file through FTP with a browser like Firefox, there is no problem :

So I don't think it is a FTP-server fault.

But then what is it ?

Hello yocanbvba,

In your post => here <= you state that the phone cannot connect to the FTP server. This is a contradiction to your prior statement there.

What FTP Server are you using and have you tried a different PC / Version of FTP server?

Our customers use the several provisioning methods every day for uncountable devices all over the world and I am not aware of any kind of the problems you are reporting.

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Best Regards

I was able to upgrade via FTP (using vsftpd on Fedora 19) to firmware version 3.3.5

But with firmware version 4.0.5, I get the error as stated in the FTP logs :

426 Failure writing network stream

Did not had this "error" with previous firmware versions.

Hello yocanbvba,

you latest reply did not answer the questions asked:

  • What FTP Server are you using and have you tried a different PC / Version of FTP server?

As mentioned in my last post uncountable user's utilize different provisioning methods with our phones and I have not had any reports that match your description.

Best Regards

I think I replied to your question.

1. Using vsftpd on Fedora 19 as FTP-server

2. No problem upgrading firmware 3.2.2 tot 3.3.5, but then -starting with 4.0.1- the FTP error occurs.

3. No problem downloading the file from another FTP client (firefox browser)

I also notice that the Polycom Phone demands the file named 2345-12500-001.bootrom.ld or bootrom.ld, BUT when downloading the firmware the files are named 2345-12500-001.sip.ld (split) and sip.ld (combined).

So I have to rename the files.

This is also very confusing !

(and on another subject : provisioning via https is still not working, only FTP)

Hello yocanbvba,

Apologize for this as I completely overlooked this or started my reply before you edited your original post.

When you download UCS 4.0.0 or above the following appears:

1) Before you can successfully install UC Software 4.0.x onto phones running Polycom® UCS released prior to version 4.0.0, you must perform a required upgrade procedure using the Polycom® Upgrader 4.0.0 Utility.

Before you download and install Polycom® UC Software version 4.0.x or higher, Polycom strongly recommends that you review the changes to the upgrade procedures detailed in the Polycom® UC Software 4.0.0 Administrators’ Guide or newer and Engineering Advisory 64731 Polycom® UC Software 4.0.0: Upgrade and Downgrade Methods.

Above clearly states that a different method to upgrade the phone is used and you simply cannot rename existing files to match a different requested file.

You need to click and accept this statement before the software can be downloaded.

In addition the community FAQ contains this post here:

Oct 7, 2011 Question: How can I setup my Phone / Provisioning / Download / Upgrade / Update / Downgrade Software?
Resolution: Please check => here <=

Above does again outline the specific requirements when upgrading or downgrading software.

Once you follow the advertised process the phone will be able to upgrade and run the latest Software.

Check this post here for more details:

Mar 08, 2013 QuestionWhat files does my phone download or upload and why?

Resolution: Please check => here <=

In regards to your post => here <= as long as you do not have a valid known certificate on your server the phone will be unable to establish a HTTPS connection.

You should see this key exchange in the wireshark trace as advised in my replies.

A list of supported Trusted Certificate Authority's is listed on Page 341 of the UCS 4.0.1 Admin guide.

You can in addition download the Polycom Root CA as explained on page 285 of the UCS 4.0.1 Admin guide.

In order to troubleshoot this from our end a support ticket via your Polycom reseller would be required.

Best Regards

OK this is clear.

So I need the Polycom Upgrader Utility.

You say : "as long as you do not have a valid known certificate on your server the phone will be unable to establish a HTTPS connection."

So with a self-signed CA there is no possibility that provisioning via https will succeed ?

And I can not add a self-signed certificate to the IP-phone ?

I notice that the Polycom phone contacts the provisioning server via http and NOT via https :

[Tue Jan 21 11:08:07 2014] [error] [client XX.XX.XX.88] File does not exist: /var/www/html/101001
[Tue Jan 21 11:08:07 2014] [error] [client XX.XX.XX.88] File does not exist: /var/www/html/101001
[Tue Jan 21 11:08:07 2014] [error] [client XX.XX.XX.88] File does not exist: /var/www/html/101001
[Tue Jan 21 11:08:08 2014] [error] [client XX.XX.XX.88] File does not exist: /var/www/html/101001

It should contact the provisioning server for the file in /var/www/vhosts/provisioning.domain.tld/101001 which is an ssl-directory.

Works perfect with other brands.

Hello yocanbvba,

the Feature Descriptions & Technical Notifications page => here <= explains in the technical bulletin 17877 how to install or create Custom Certificates with SoundPoint IP Phones.

If the phone is not running UCS 4.0.0 the low level BootROM will always attempt to connect via HTTP to a server. Once the Application (SIP) has started any further communication will be in secure HTTPS.

If UCS 4.0.0 or newer is installed the low level Updater will use HTTPS or other secure protocols like FTPS.

Please be aware in order to troubleshoot this any further a support ticket via your Polycom reseller would be required.

Best Regards
