I'm provisioning a set of SoundPoint 335s and want to keep the provisioning servers directory structure clean and concise. According to [FAQ] What is the relevance of the 000000000000.cfg or <mac>.cfg,

The OVERRIDES_DIRECTORY="" can be used for the <mac>-phone.cfg and/or <mac>-web.cfg.
If nothing is specified the files are stored / loaded in/from the root directory.

I have this value set to a subdirectory, and the phones load and save the <mac>-phone.cfg from the specified location. The phones, however, refuse to load the <mac>-web.cfg overrides from the same location and instead default to the FTP root. How could this be? Why is it "and/or" and why is this statement left without specification?

Excerpt from Master config file for reference:

<APPLICATION APP_FILE_PATH="sip.ld" CONFIG_FILES="" MISC_FILES="" LOG_FILE_DIRECTORY="Logs/[PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS]" OVERRIDES_DIRECTORY="Overrides/[PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS]" CONTACTS_DIRECTORY="" LICENSE_DIRECTORY="" USER_PROFILES_DIRECTORY="" CALL_LISTS_DIRECTORY="">

Hello TKtech,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

It is always useful to include the currently used SIP or UC Software version as issues experienced may already be addressed in a newer release.

This also allows yourself and others to check against current software release notes.

The above is also stated in the "Read First"

Therefore the Polycom VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Question: How can I find out my SIP UC Software Version or the BootROM Version of my Phone?
Resolution: Please check here

In addition the variable substitution you used, aka [PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS],is to my knowledge only applicable for the CONFIG_FILES and the APP_FILE_PATH and not as used by yourself.

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Sorry, I had every intention of including that information:

UC Software Version 4.0.10.0689

BootROM Software Version 5.0.10.0028

Also, the variable substitution/expansion works as expected here. This has been confirmed with other override files, other files in general, and witnessed in the logs. Here is an excerpt from the logs:

Hello Hello TKtech,

Like mentioned already, to my knowledge and experience using this feature, we usually use this for file names itself and not to "find" directories but if you feel this is a bug you need to open a support ticket.

In order to raise a support ticket you need to work with your Polycom reseller as they need to do this for you. In case this is some sort of an Internet discounter please post your phone's MAC address so I can look up who would be able to support you.

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

So far as I can tell, variable expansion takes place regardless, and is wholly used in creating a functional URI, but lets not let that bit get in the way of things as it is not the issue.

I have also tried without <mac> variable expansion, with just regular directories for logs and overides. This functions exactly the same! Logs are stored in the specified directory, and the <mac>-phone.cfg is stored in the specified Overrides directory. The <mac>-web.cfg override is still only read and written to the root directory, as seen in these respective logs (they have been commented for clearity:

000034.796|cfg |3|1665|Prov|Provisioning succeeded

So, just to summarize; [PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS] variable expansion CAN take place in any part of the URI. This is valid and works reliably as expected. The device does not use the OVERRIDES_DIRECTORY value in reference to web overrides. I feel like this behavior is counter-intuitive, and conflics with documentation. I would classify this as a bug, and would like to request a support ticket.

I do not know of my retailer for this device, but the MAC is both in the logs and here: 0004f237d339

Hello TKtech,

I am seeing this as a borderline case but I escalated this internally. The current reference for this is VESC-6522.

Your phone was sold back in 2011 so there is no warranty in order for SCANSOURCE COMMUNICATIONS to open a ticket for you.

I am not aware yet how much priority this will receive either.

Hello all,

this was fixed in UC Software 4.0.12 via

  • VOIP-118008 The changed settings in the MAC-web.cfg file of the phone does not get uploaded to the path provided in the VERRIDES_DIRECTORY through Web Configuration Utility.
