Hello,

Hopefully this is  a simple fix; we are looking to disable playing dial-tone from Polycom phones that have no physical network connectivity. Why? This will indicate to our users that the phone is un-plugged in rather than getting a tempting dial-tone followed by an error. We are looking to mirror the way POTS works in this regard.

Thanks!

Hello Bo,

as explained it is working as designed meaning there is no way to turn the dial tone off based on the fact if a network is present or not.

Hello ,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

This is a simple functionality and working as designed. SIP Endpoints create their own dialtone.

Please ensure to post your questions in the right section in the future as I have moved this post to here.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, this is a simple function and I understand it is working as designed. My question still remains however: how do I turn off this feature so it does not produce dial-tone when there is no network connectivity? Your help is appreciated!

Steffen,

Thank you for the prompt reply. So I will tell my customer that we are unable to alter the dial-tone on their Polycom phones even when the phone should typically be silent because of no network connection. This is a bit disapointing, but that's life!

Thank you,

I would also recommend you inform your customer that the phone icon is a great indication of "working status". When the phone icon is solid you are able to place calls, if it is hollow or and outline the phone is disabled.

I have recommended to our customer that they observe the phone icon for network status and that the dial-tone is non-configurable and will play regardless of connectivity. They have replied: "While Polycom may call this a feature, I see it as a weak point...in their design... Based off of this, I'm going to drop Polycom desk phones from consideration..."

This is unfortunate and very confusing. In our lab we have Polycom 331 phones and they DO NOT get a dial-tone when simply plugged in without proper provisioning. Same firmware version as the customer - 3.3.1.09.33. Would you mind explaining the conditions that produce dial-tone in Polycom 331's (or in general)? Simply powered on or do they need to be provisioned and registered? Other conditions?

Thank you,

Bo

Hello Bo,

without knowing how you actually tested this I did a quick sanity check on a SPIP650 running UCS 4.0.2 Rev B that only has a Line registration and the rest of the Settings are factory default.

If powered by a Power Supply and no PoE and the network is unplugged from the switch (back of the Phone or switch End) the Phone will show network is down and no longer play a Dial Tone.

Standard Configuration with feature.urlDialing.enabled="1":

If the uplink from a switch is disconnected (Phone would lose registration) and therefore no network activity is not possible the phone will play a dialtone until a timer runs out (I did not check the time period).

A warning message will appear that the line has unregistered and the phone will show an exclamation mark and still play the dial tone.

Changed Configuration with feature.urlDialing.enabled="0":

If the uplink from a switch is disconnected (Phone would lose registration) and therefore no network activity is not possible the phone will play a dialtone until a timer runs out (I did not check the time period).

A warning message will appear that the line has unregistered and the phone will show an exclamation mark and no longer play the dial tone.

If you are not satisfied with this reply please raise a support ticket with Polycom via your reseller.

Any changes to the standard configuration need to be raised as a feature request via your Polycom Reseller with a business plan justifying the change to the standard behavior.

Best Regards

Steffen,

The sanity check is a good idea! The customer updated me saying that the power situation was different from previously posted: They are using PoE, no power adapter/supply. I have not had the chance to verify what the icon on their phone looks like. So it appears that the uplink is disconnected and the dial-tone will go on a timer of unknown length. Then the timer will run out, no longer playing the dial-tone and show a warning message. Is that the expectation you would have?

Thanks again,

Bo

Hello Bo,

whilst checking this in UCS 4.0.2 Rev B the timer was around a minute but I did not pay that much attention to the actual time.

Dial Tone will be played if factory default is used and the uplink to the server and not the physical cable without PoE is being lost.

No Dialtone will be played if the URL dialing ="0" and above scenario happens.

Easily reproducible for you in your lab.

Regards
