We found out about Polycom paging and would like to test it.

We have tried earlier Broadworks Group paging but it has constraints (multicast is sent back and forth via SBC to Broadworks servers), therefore performance is not great for 10+ phones.

Just wondering if Polycom phones (that seem do send multicast locally) have any constraints if paging is needed for many phones (i.e. over 40)? Business case is car dealerhip or shop with multiple phones and  areas.

How would you compare it with isuing ATA+overhead speaker (where sould would go via speakers which might be preferable vs phones) or alternative hardware paging solutions?

Thank you!

Hello VoIPonaught,

I am not sure what method you mean by BroadWorks Group Paging but I assume you mean the Auto Answer SIP functionality which would simply call one or multiple phones and answer the call straight to the loudspeaker.

This is not really a page as it sets up one or multiple individual calls.

The Polycom PTT or Goup Page is a true multicast page and the phones simply "listen" to this.

The protocol is described in detail => here <= and there are 3rd party manufacturers offering devices for this.

Thanks for response.

I meant Group Paging service - it actually sends multicast to speakerphones, but consumes plenty of traffic.

What would be the benefit of using a dedicated hardware + phones for paging?

Hello VoIPonaught,

A little while ago I posted => this <=

I am unsure how a multicast page would consume huge amounts of bandwidth as the beauty of multicast is one to many.

A page to a single subscribed phone would not consume more data than a page to 100.

I believe I have answered everything that can be discussed within this community so please work for further support with your Polycom reseller.
