SoundPoint IP 650 Speakerphone Buzz

I've purchased a Polycom IP 650. Sadly, when I use the speakerphone function, I can hear the other party clearly, but they hear a constant loud buzz from my side.

Is this terminal, or is there something I can do to troubleshoot?

I can upload a recording of the buzz if that would help.

Re: SoundPoint IP 650 Speakerphone Buzz

Hello gdi2k,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

It is always useful to provide some background on the phone you are using.

You are stating you purchased this but you have not mentioned if this is an used or a brand new unit.

In addition it is always useful to include the currently used SIP or UC Software version as issues experienced may already be addressed in a newer release.

Please also include if you are using a SIP server or a LYNC server

This also allows yourself and others to check against current software release notes.

The above is also stated in the "Read First: Welcome to the Polycom VoIP Forum"

Therefore the Polycom VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Question: How can I find out my SIP UC Software Version or the BootROM Version of my Phone?
Resolution: Please check here

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Best Regards

Re: SoundPoint IP 650 Speakerphone Buzz

Thanks for the response Steffen.

It was bought on ebay and although I don't know the history of the device, it has clearly never been used. Perhaps it was tested once, found to have a speakerphone buzz and abondoned.

I have UC Software Version 4.0.9.0509 and BootROM Software Version 5.0.9.0001.

After testing it for a while, I found that the buzz stopped when mute was pressed, so I figured it was likely a hardware issue (mic).

I pulled it apart and found the mic wires were running over the top of a bunch of mainboard components. I don't know if that's normal or not, but I re-routed them away. I also removed the mic from its grommet to see if I could see any model numbers or similar with the intent to see if I could swap it with a mic from one of our lesser IP335s.

Anyway, when I put it back together and tested it, no more buzz! Werid. I've attached some images, can you see anything wrong with the mic wiring? I can only assume that moving the mic cable away from the mainboard components resolved the issue, but it could just be coincidence.

Very glad it's resolved, and it was also a pleasure to dismantle the device - the internals reak of quality!

Well, I thought this was solved, but spoke too soon. I was away for a few days, and now that I'm back, the buzz is back as well.

What can I try next?

Re: SoundPoint IP 650 Speakerphone Buzz

Hello gdi2k,

welcome back to the Polycom Community.

The phone was sold back in 2011 via Adran I believe so I assume, without the phone being returned to Poycom to investigate, that you may have been sold a defective unit.

There have been no service requests raised for the MAC address so I am unable to check the history further.

Re: SoundPoint IP 650 Speakerphone Buzz

Thanks for replying Steffen - I wasn't notified of the response so have only just seen it.

I bought it "used" but it was clearly brand new, so yes, perhaps it is defective. Is there anything I can usefully do at this point, or should I just ditch it? The phone is now in Asia, so there's no practical way of getting it back to the US for any type of service.

Re: SoundPoint IP 650 Speakerphone Buzz

Do you think it would be worth trying to switch out the mic for an IP335 mic (which we have plenty of and don't need speakerphone funtionality)? Or is it more likely to be an issue on the mainboard? Happy to get my hands dirty for an hour before ordering up a new one...

Re: SoundPoint IP 650 Speakerphone Buzz

Does anyone have any less official advice? The thing is a paperweight at this point with a replacement on the way, so I'm happy to experiment.
