VVX500 Picking Up Handset Behavior

The VVX500 automatically gives a dial tone and selects a vacant line when you pick up the handset.  Can this be customized?  I have an executive with a shared line that does not like to have to cancel the open line when picking up a line his assistant has placed on hold.
