We'd like to create provisioning server for our Polycom VVX 300 phones. We'd like to manage the phones through this. Are there instructions out there on how to do this?

Hello @CharGP02A,

welcome back to the Polycom Community.

Both the community's Must Read First and the community's FAQ reference the basic minimum information a new or follow up post should contain.

This ensures the questions having to be asked are limited and any new or follow up post contains the right amount of details to ensure any voluntary participant within the community does not spend additional time chasing basic information.

As a reminder the basic information asked for:

  • Provide the exact Software Version of your Phone
  • Provide the Phone Model
  • Provide the Call Platform (aka openSIP,Skype for Business Online, Skype for Business on Premise, Lync)
  • Additional Polycom Infrastructure (RPRM,PDMS or BToE)
  • If applicable provide a backup of the phone in question

UC Software 4.0.0 or later via the Web Interface Utilities > Phone Backup & Restore > Phone Backup > Phone Backup

  • If possible provide a Log and either attach them or use the Code Tag.Consult the Troubleshooting Section found within the FAQ if applicable
  • If possible provide the MAC Address or Serial of the device
  • Provide details if the issue is a day 1 issue or only happened after an upgrade or any other relevant details

Whilst providing some of these details may not directly impact any possible answer the community can provide, it does enable Polycom to have an overview of the current software used. In addition other details allow us to check logs or look up a potential support partners if an issue needs to come into support. It also enables us to verify the entitlement for using features.

Please ensure you always check the FAQ's and/or utilize the community search before posting any new topics or follow up post’s.

Software: 5.6.0.17325

Phone: Polycom VVX 300

Platform: Skype for Business

Our uses have the Polycom BToE app installed

I checked out the links you sent me but I'm not sure if these are step by step instructions on how to set up a provisioning server to manage these. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hello @CharGP02A,

your expectations on what a Provisioning Server can do may be a misconception.

The term simply describes a FTP(s), HTTP(s) or TFTP server hosting the relevant files required to operate a phone.

Configuration can be used to periodically to check for changes.

The creating of configuration is a manual process.

Polycom offers professional solutions as already mentioned. In addition I am quite sure 3rd party's may also offer something.

Our goal is to have a server that manages the phones and their updates. It would allow us to centralize them and deploy them at will. Currently, we can only update phones on a 1 to 1 basis. Are you saying that the provisional server doesn't allow for that kind of management?

Hello @CharGP02A,

Again A Provisioning Server is just a term for a platform offering this service. You can simply set this up as explained in my original post but this does not involve any Web UI or automation and requires manual interaction.

This is in detail described in the UC Software Admin Guide and/or within the community FAQs or using the Community Search.

A chargeable solution like RPRM or the PDMS-E Cloud service most likely does what you are after.

Please work with e Polycom reseller for details.

Thanks for helping so far. I've been doing research on this implementation and I'm thinking that the conclusion here is that if I want to be able to deploy updates to all the phones via an FTP provisioning server, I won't be able to do that. If that is correct, then you may be right in that I should look to the Cloud provider as an option. Cost is prohibitive on the other one.
