Which SW version, combined, split or CAB for VVX411?

My SfB VVX411 is on SIP  Version 5.4.1.18405 while under "phone | Updater" it says 5.6.1.23740.  My desktop client doesn't give me the option of selecting "handset" for prefered audio device, only PC Mic and Spkr.  I'm hoping that the latest 5.7.0.11768 release fixes that, or gives me the automatic Better over Ethernet connectivity. There already is some integration between the two.  For example, on an incoming call, the PC displays the name and number, if available, and alerts me along with the Polycom phone ringing.  If I'm in a Skype meeting, it senses when the deskphone mute is activated and the PC displays "a presenter has muted you."  What I'm looking for is better integration whereby I can click on a phone number and it'll dial out using the SfB Polycom rather than PC mic & spkr.  However, the Release notes are the same for both Combined (354MB) vs. Split (713MB) so which one should I be upgrading with?

Hello @JVixPoly,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

CAB files are for the LYNC / Skype for Business Server to update the Phone

The community's VoIP FAQ contains this post here:

Split and Combined are explained in the above

The BToE Application is most likely what you are after.

Re: Which SW version, combined, split or CAB for VVX411?

Steffen, thanks for the reply but I still have questions.  Allow me to provide more detail: I am a user in a large corporation whose IT Dept. doesn't support the SfB phones--only the desktop app.  I purchased the VVX411 myself.  Since I have no control over the Server side SW, I'd like to at least upgrade my 411 to the latest SW.  I'm on the engineering side in an unrelated dept., so I'm comfortable attempting to provide the optimum work environment for myself upgrading the SfB phone.  Given the above info, should I proceed with installing either the Combined (354MB) or Split (713MB) SW and which one?  You mentioned the CAB files are for the server--so I'm not doing anything with those, although I could recommend the IT Dept. to upgrade their side, not knowing which version they are running though.  Please advise how a "do it yourself" techie worker can upgrade his own phone.  I see more people buying or looking to buy these for work-at-home situations using SfB.

Hello @JVixPoly,

The above FAQ explains the difference between the two. You can use either or use the online version described below:

Re: Which SW version, combined, split or CAB for VVX411?

Steffen,

I appreciate your attempts at pointing me to the FAQ postings.  Honestly, that is now 6.5 years old (date Oct. 7, 2011)  and could use an update, although some things don't change.  Anyway, here's where I'm at:  I logged into the VVX411 and what I need is a sample xml showing a typical schema to point to a local folder on my PC where I've downloaded the updated SW to.  I had to click on "Custom Server" since the other selection, "hosted server" has the same version I currently have (5.4.1.18405) and is of no use.  Keep in mind, I'm doing this myself, since our IT Dept. doesn't support the external SfB phone devices.  Can someone give me insight into how I'd structure the xml to point to my local PC including the NAT'ed address example like 10.0.0.x/Configs. for the file directory so the phone can find the sip.ld file?  Is there another way to do this?  Perhaps suggesting to the IT Dept. that they post the lastest version on their server.

Re: Which SW version, combined, split or CAB for VVX411?

Hello @JVixPoly,

first of all, as outlined in my signature, I am doing all this in my spare time so I am trying to be as optimized as I can and therefore create FAQ's which people can find via looking at them or me posting these.

In addition, as you may be unable to see the edit times of these individual articles, but the last change to this document was at 02-05-2017 08:21 AM.

The answers provided and the FAQ's quoted provide you with the quickest answer.

In addition everyone is free to check the latest or prior admin guide in their own time:

  • You can choose the combined UC software package or the split UC software package.
The combined version contains all files for all phone models

  • The split software package is smaller, downloads more quickly, and contains sip.ld files for each phone model, enabling you to choose provisioning software for your phone model(s) and maintain software versions for each model in the same root directory

If you want to do this the more complex way (other than a simple FTP server as explained in the FAQ)

Mar 30, 2012 Question: Can I host my own upgrade Server?
Resolution: Please check => here <=

The CAB files is nothing Polycom specific and is a Microsoft process which your IT team would know about or can inquire from Microsoft.
